At this distance the pixels blend together and the image looks perfectly sharp.

Viewing distance trades off two goals that pull in opposite directions. At a desk you sit close for sharpness — near enough to fill the screen with detail, but not so near that the pixel grid shows or you must swivel your head to read the corners. On a couch you sit far for immersion — close enough that the picture fills a satisfying slice of your vision, but not so far that a big screen feels small. The recommended range spans both: its near edge is the closest pixel-sharp distance, its far edge is where the image still fills a cinematic field of view.

The near edge comes from visual acuity. Normal 20/20 vision resolves detail down to about one arcminute (one-sixtieth of a degree); below that, neighbouring pixels blur into one and the grid disappears. From your size and resolution the calculator finds the pixel density, then applies the standard result that the "retina" distance is roughly 3438 ÷ pixels-per-inch, in inches. A 4K panel packs four times the pixels of a same-size 1080p one, so its pixels are half as wide and you can sit about half as close before the grid shows — the whole case for higher resolution: sit closer, or run a bigger screen at the same distance, without softness.

The far edge comes from field of view — how much of your vision the screen fills. Horizontal field of view is 2 × arctan((screen width ÷ 2) ÷ distance), which rearranges to give the distance for any target angle. SMPTE recommends at least 30° for a comfortable cinema-style picture (the range's far edge); THX recommends 36–40° for an immersive, front-row feel (the closer "as a TV" reading).
