0 attemptsEvery Formula 1 race starts the same way: five pairs of red lights above the grid light one column at a time, one second apart. Once all five are lit they hold, then after a deliberately random pause every light goes out at once — that is the start signal; there is no green. Because the hold length changes every start, drivers cannot launch on rhythm and must genuinely react; moving before lights-out is a jump start. This test recreates that sequence — the one-second cadence, the unpredictable hold, and the jump-start rule.

A high-precision timer starts on the lights-out frame and stops on your click or tap. Click while any light is still on and it is a jump start: no time, back to the grid. Every clean attempt is recorded so your last, average, and best times build up with a chart of recent launches. Hardware adds a share of any score — mouse and display lag typically 10–50 ms — on top of pure reflexes.
What counts as a fast start?
Most people react to a visual cue in 200–300 ms; the widely cited average is about 273 ms. F1 drivers, after thousands of practice starts, typically get away 200–300 ms after lights-out — and sometimes far quicker by gambling on the hold (Bottas’s famous 2019 start was roughly 0.04 s). Anything under about 100 ms here is anticipation, not reaction — the same threshold athletics uses for a false start. The five-light rhythm helps you focus, but the random hold means a fast time still has to be earned.
