Mouse Rate Tester (Polling Rate)
Measure your mouse’s polling rate — how often it reports its position, in hertz (Hz) — with a live meter. Move your cursor in the box below; the faster and longer you move, the more accurate your current, peak, and average reading.
Move your mouse here to measure
Move your mouse in the box to begin — the faster you move, the more cleanly we can sample its polling rate.
Polling rate is how often your mouse reports its position to the computer, in hertz (Hz) — reports per second. A 125 Hz mouse reports every 8 ms, a 1000 Hz mouse every 1 ms. A higher rate means fresher cursor data each frame, so input latency is lower and more consistent and fast flicks track more precisely. It’s separate from DPI, which sets how far the cursor moves — polling rate is about when the mouse reports, DPI about how much.
Browsers bundle mouse movements into one event per frame, so counting ordinary move events would only measure your display’s refresh rate. To find the real rate, this test reads getCoalescedEvents() — every raw sample the browser received between frames — and counts those samples over time. Everything runs locally, and because a mouse only reports while it’s moving, you have to keep the cursor moving for a reading.
Treat the “Max” figure as the best estimate of your mouse’s true capability and the average as how it behaves in practice. Readings usually land just under the nominal rate — a 1000 Hz mouse showing 950–1000 Hz is normal, since a busy system drops the odd sample. If the number sits near your monitor’s refresh rate (60, 120, 144 Hz) no matter how fast you move, your browser isn’t exposing raw samples and you’re seeing the per-frame ceiling, not the mouse’s real rate.
Common polling rates
| Polling rate | Report interval | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms | Standard office mice, many basic wireless models |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms | Budget gaming mice, battery-saver wireless modes |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms | Gaming mice — a common out-of-the-box default |
| 1000 Hz | 1 ms | The gaming standard, wired and wireless |
| 2000–4000 Hz | 0.5–0.25 ms | High-end mice, often via a high-speed dongle |
| 8000 Hz | 0.125 ms | Flagship esports mice — gains past 1000 Hz are small |
