A solid color screen removes every distraction — no text, icons, or gradients — so the panel itself becomes the thing you are looking at. Against a single flat color, a pixel that never lights up or a patch of uneven backlight stands out immediately, and a layer of dust or a fingerprint is far easier to see than over a busy desktop. The same flat field doubles as a controllable light source: a bright white screen lights a subject for a quick photo, and a dim warm screen behind a monitor works as bias lighting that eases eye strain in a dark room.

Pick one of the presets — white, black, the RGB primaries and their cyan, magenta, and yellow complements, three greys, and two warm bias-light tones — or dial in any color with the native picker or a hex code. Once full screen, click anywhere or use the arrow keys to step through the colors without leaving the overlay, and press Esc when you are done. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

What to look for depends on the color on screen. Every pixel is built from red, green, and blue subpixels, so a defect usually shows as a tiny dot that appears — or disappears — only on certain colors: dark specks on white are dead subpixels, bright dots on black are stuck ones. Larger-scale problems read differently: glowing patches near the edges of a black screen are backlight bleed, and cloudy or streaky areas on a mid-grey are uniformity flaws known as mura. Set brightness fairly high, view the panel head-on, and darken the room for the black-screen checks.

Bias lighting, mood light, and photography

Bias lighting is a soft, neutral or warm light placed behind or around a screen. Raising the brightness of the area behind your monitor reduces the contrast between the screen and the dark wall, which lowers perceived eye strain during long sessions and can make colors look more consistent. A second monitor or a phone showing a dim warm solid color is an easy stand-in for a dedicated bias light. The same flat field works as a simple mood or ambient light for a room, a clean white or black backdrop for product shots, or a soft fill light for close-up photography and video calls.

Tips for a thorough check

  • Wipe the screen first with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth — never spray liquid directly onto a panel — so you don’t mistake a speck of dust for a dead pixel.
  • White and light grey show dust and dry smears; black shows greasy fingerprints and streaks. Switching between the two confirms the glass is genuinely clean, not just clean against one background.
  • Cycle through all three primaries, not just white and black — a stuck subpixel can look perfectly normal on every color except one.
  • Check black in a dark room with brightness turned up: backlight bleed and IPS glow are invisible under room lighting.
  • Scan the whole panel slowly and save the corners and edges for last — that is where bleed and clouding concentrate.
  • A stuck (colored) pixel can sometimes be revived by rapidly cycling colors over it; a dead (black) pixel is usually permanent and covered by warranty only above a pixel-count threshold.
