Monitor Contrast Test
Set and check your monitor’s contrast — the white level — with three full-screen patterns: highlight detail, a gradient, and black-vs-white. A visual guide for eyeballing your panel, not a contrast-ratio measurement.

The Contrast control sets how bright the brightest tones drive the panel. Too high clips highlight detail; too low makes whites dull.
On the highlight pattern, tune contrast until levels 254 and 253 are only just visible against pure white without merging into it.
Turn off dynamic contrast, set brightness (black level) first, then adjust the Contrast setting. This is a visual guide, not a measurement.
Contrast sets the white level (gain) — how hard the signal drives the panel’s top end. Too high clips the brightest tones: near-white steps merge and highlight detail is lost. Too low leaves whites dull and grey, wasting range. It’s separate from Brightness (the black level), so set brightness first, then raise contrast to just below where the top steps vanish.
The pattern sets ten near-white patches — luminance 230 to 254 — on a pure-white (255) field, each labelled. With contrast right, you can just make out the top steps (254, 253, 252) against the white, each slightly darker than the last. If they vanish, contrast is clipping — lower it until they return; if every patch is heavy and obvious, it may be too low. Work in a dim room and let your eyes adjust.
Contrast ratio is the brightest white divided by the darkest black at the same settings — the static (native) ratio, which drives an image’s depth and “pop”. Dynamic contrast ratio (DCR) is a marketing figure taken as the backlight ramps between all-white and all-black scenes, so it looks huge but says nothing about a single frame. A browser can’t measure these — that needs a colorimeter — but the dynamic-range pattern shows how cleanly your panel separates deepest black from brightest white.

Setting contrast from the monitor OSD
- Open your monitor’s OSD with the buttons or joystick and find the Contrast setting; many panels default to 50, or 75–80 in the factory image mode.
- Turn off any “Dynamic Contrast”, DCR or per-frame local dimming while calibrating — it fights you by changing the level as the pattern changes.
- Set Brightness (the black level) first with a brightness or black-level test, then adjust Contrast on the highlight pattern here.
- Raise contrast until the top steps (254, 253) just start to disappear, then back off a notch or two so they stay faintly visible — that is full-range whites without clipping.
- Re-check with the gradient and dynamic-range patterns, and confirm mid-tones with a gamma test. This is a visual guide — it depends on your ambient light and the panel’s limits, not an absolute measurement.
